5 Reasons to Visit a Chiropractor After an Auto Accident

Written By Tracy & Keim Chiropractic LLC on June 6, 2023

For many of us, the summer months mean travel, vacation, and road trips. Warm weather and summer breaks provide a much-needed opportunity to have fun and enjoy the sunshine, but busy roads this time of year also lead to an increase in car accidents and auto injuries.

If a road trip goes wrong, even if it’s just a minor fender-bender, one of the first calls you place should be to your chiropractor. It’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible, not only to help with insurance claims (prompt documentation of injuries and treatment can help establish that your injuries were in fact the result of the car accident), but also to give you peace of mind and speed your recovery process.

Here are 5 reasons to visit a chiropractor after an auto accident:

Identify and Treat Injuries

Even if you have no visible injuries and are not experiencing pain, you should still have your chiropractor examine you. Sometimes back pain or symptoms of whiplash don’t show up immediately and can lead to problems further down the line unless identified and treated quickly. Your chiropractor can identify soft tissue injuries that an X-ray wouldn’t pick up, so that you can get an accurate idea of the extent of your injuries and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Safe, Non-Invasive Methods

Chiropractic care is very safe and non-invasive. In many cases, this makes it the ideal course of health care to try first. Your chiropractor can determine whether more extensive treatment is called for and may even be able to help you avoid the need for medications and other treatments that can have unpleasant side effects. Your chiropractor can also refer you to other practitioners if needed.

Treat Headaches and Whiplash

Many people develop chronic headaches after a car accident, due to whiplash or other hidden injuries to the spine. Your chiropractor is well-versed in the many causes of headaches and how to prevent them, and can adjust your spine to alleviate back pain as well as headaches caused by misalignment, tension, and stress.

Increase Ranges of Motion

Another common problem you might face after an auto accident is stiffness and decreased ranges of motion. Restricted movement can feel debilitating, but visits to your chiropractor can help you increase your ranges of motion to make everyday movements feel more comfortable and natural.

Reduce Inflammation

Much of the pain you experience after an injury is due to inflammation—a problem that chiropractic is uniquely equipped to handle. By addressing inflammation at its source, a chiropractor can not only reduce the symptoms, but also the underlying cause of your discomfort.

Avoiding Car Accidents

Of course, prevention is the best remedy. As you travel this summer, be sure to:

  • Wear your seatbelt
  • Keep a safe distance
  • Drive alert
  • Avoid driving during times that are particularly busy or when you are tired
  • Stop to take breaks if you’re traveling long distances
  • Avoid distractions (such as eating or checking your phone) while you drive
  • Keep an eye on road conditions and, when possible, avoid traveling during times of low visibility and bad weather
  • Obey the speed limit
  • Enjoy life in the slow lane—it’s summertime, after all!

We are here to support you on the road to good health, so if you need us—whether for treatment after a fender bender or just preventative care to help you enjoy life to the fullest—we are only a phone call away. Safe travels from all of us here at Tracy and Keim Chiropractic, and have a wonderful summer!
